As a Technical Support Specialist of Optical Transport (DWDM) Networks, you ensure that there is always a high availability of our networks. You are guaranteed varied work, work at different locations throughout the Netherlands, and also work from home. Together with an enthusiastic and driven team, you are responsible for the top performance of KPN's most important networks. You will face complex challenges and frequently work under time pressure. Moreover, you contribute to high-tech innovations.

Your role as Technisch Beheerder Optische Transport (DWDM) Netwerken

You work in the core of our fiber optic internet. Our four main data centers are interconnected, and over these fiber optic connections with DWDM, a tremendous amount of traffic flows (tens of Tb/s). Fiber optic routes are laid throughout the country, on which DWDM networks are also situated. These networks also provide direct service to customers who require high availability between their offices.

As a Technical Support Specialist, you and your team ensure that the Optical Transport networks meet security and customer requirements and are always available. You anticipate operational risks and take initiatives to prevent service disruptions. As part of the 2nd line OPS team, you keep four of KPN's most crucial networks in top condition. You organize assistance from other teams when necessary. You collaborate with the DEV team on state-of-the-art innovations in functionality, performance, and security. You are not afraid to share new ideas and encourage your team to optimize both technology and the way of working.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Incident handling (2nd line, also within a 24/7 on-call schedule)
  • Preventive maintenance on DWDM networks (including equipment replacement)
  • Support for innovation projects
  • Life cycle management
  • Continuous optimization of technology and working methods (teamwork)

This is your team

You are part of the OTN OPS team. Here, we are responsible for the maintenance and renewal of our optical (D)WDM networks, according to the requirements set by our stakeholders. The OPS team currently consists of 9 enthusiastic employees aged between 32 and 66.

At present, the team works 2 days a week in the office, one day in Zoetermeer and one day in Amersfoort. In other cases, we make arrangements with each other about when, where, and for what purpose we want to work together in the office. Work locations also include: the Test & Release Center in Rotterdam and any location along our OTN routes, including customer sites, throughout the Netherlands

  • Solid knowledge of and experience with optical (D)WDM networks and their network element management systems
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with (D)WDM testing and measuring equipment
  • Good oral and written communication skills, and proficiency in both Dutch and English
  • Knowledge of and experience with acceptance testing, implementation of network software updates, and network administration (NWA)
  • Knowledge of security & compliance requirements
  • For this role, you will be required to work in KPN's technical buildings, third-party data centers, and customer sites throughout the Netherlands. You will also participate in 24/7 on-call services.

  • Excellent pension conditions: a total contribution of 23% of your pensionable salary, of which KPN contributes 16% and you 7%
